    Artist's Bio

Domenico Foschi was born in Bari, Italy, in 1962. Although constantly exploring different kinds of creative media since childhood, he discovered a love for photography after stealing his brother's camera to document a short trip. He was nineteen at the time.

Unable to afford a formal education in photography, he turned to books in order to learn the techniques of the masters. Domenico found power in the photographic expression of Alvin Langdon Coburn, Kertesz, Steichen, Stieglitz, Strand, Sander, Penn, Avedon and Mapplethorpe; all of pivotal importance in his inspiration as a Fine Art photographer. Working in the Sergio Guidetti Studio Fotografico, Domenico received hands on training in wet plate processes, the use of large format cameras, and developing and printing techniques.

Domenico then put his skill to a different use and worked as a freelance commercial photographer in Ravenna, his home-town, shooting primarily for magazines, newspapers, city administration and political figures. However, he eventually realized that commercial photography did not allow him to express his creativity in a personal way.

Domenico moved to the U. S. in 1989, an opportunity which has afforded him the production of four different portfolios; ranging from portraits, Urban Landscapes, Still Life, and images of cemetery statuaries. Despite his fine art focus, Domenico has not abandoned all commercial work given he has occasionally created CD covers for recording artists.

    D. F. has won awards and honorable mentions for his Fine Art work and his images are in collections throughout the United States, Europe and Latin America.

    Artist's Statement

I believe Art has many functions, one being as vehicle that allows us to explore our own and the Universal Truth. An artist has the duty to support the idea that beauty has infinite facets and that light and acceptance are necessary ingredients to reveal beauty in everything, in every aspect of life, as horrible as it may be.

Eyes are deceiving, truth lies in the heart.

My photography is strictly influenced by memories, life experiences. The images are roadmaps to my inner world, sometime testimonials of a found past, sometimes symptoms of roads yet to explore.

Although I do use modern lenses which provide a sharp rendition of the subject, I prefer to work mainly with old brass lenses dated around 1860's. These tools, because of their optical design help me to achieve mood in my images. Areas out of focus carry an important weight in my work: they are the equivalent of reading between the lines in poetry; they open the doors to an unknown imagery, where shapes, although still vaguely familiar, simultaneously challenge and lure us to a softer and more exciting world.

These tools, together with the use of large format cameras (4 x 5, 8 x 10) and the shooting and printing techniques employed, act as filters through which the image is born.

I challenge myself in tackling every different portfolio by utilizing different techniques. The motivation for this approach is that I find the world of photography excitingly vast and getting stuck in one look or technique would be gimmicky and unchallenging.
